Master Gardener Judy Moskoff shares her thoughts on iron design. Visit Judy’s blog, A Gardener’s Home, at agardenershome.blogspot.com.

With a new emphasis on dining and living spaces outside, I find myself looking at interior objects in a new way, and iron and metal objects make sense for outside use. (In truth, I’m also looking for things the grandchildren won’t break.)
Landscapers and interior designers have often used iron urns to enhance both our indoor and exterior plantings. I currently use iron urns purchased at Gringo Jones to decorate the top of our hutch in the dining room. They tie into the iron urns on the deck, which is accessed from the dining room.

My iron “mice,” originally purchased at Christopher’s to keep the napkins from blowing away outside, play among the desert plates on the hutch when not being used outside. My mom hates the thought of any kind of mice in the dining room – but the grandchildren love it. You just have to find a balance.

Jan Barboglio, fashion designer turned home accessories designer, has a wonderful selection of items, such as this incredible napkin ring, available through Maggies, www.maggies.com.

Her wine glass with an iron base makes a perfect indoor or outdoor selection for your tabletop. And, don’t forget her collectible iron bottle toppers for that bottle of wine you plan to share, which are available at Neiman Marcus, www.neimanmarcus.com.

In a recent magazine article, Jan Barboglio sets the table with white napkins, mice and her napkin ring – no wonder I love her designs!
Have fun and enjoy the summer – whether you are outside or inside!

Installing eco-friendly water fixtures in your home is not only environmentally responsible, it’s financially savvy, too. Low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators, which can cut water consumption and heating costs by more than half, utilize high pressure and aeration to produce a comfortable flow of water that feels nearly identical to that of standard fixtures. And, baths designed with multiple showerheads use even more water and energy than a single standard fixture, so installing low-flow fixtures in these spaces can be especially helpful.
WaterSense – a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partnership program that promotes water efficiency and water-efficient products, programs and practices – recommends specific fixtures for their earth-friendly aspects. According to the EPA, if one of of every 10 homes in the U.S. upgraded to WaterSense labeled fixtures, more than 120 billion gallons of water and more than $800 million could be saved annually. In addition, simply installing WaterSense labeled bathroom sink faucets could save the average household more than 500 gallons of water each year.

WaterSense labeled fixtures are available in a variety of styles and brands, so it’s easy to find eco-chic fixtures that match your home’s style and décor. Visit a local kitchen and bath firm today to learn more about low-flow fixtures, as well as more ways to improve your home’s green appeal.

Mom and I always try to cram as much into our limited time together as possible. A perfect example of this was when last week, in Springfield, Missouri, we ventured out in a thunderstorm to have lunch in a small café a friend had mentioned. The day we visited the apple blossoms were gone, but plenty of herbs and perennials surrounded the building and porches, adding scent and color.
With few patrons out in such terrible weather, we were able to visit with Sunshine Valley Farm owner, Jan Wooten. She explained the café’s creamy cheese had just been purchased on a trip to Krebs, Oklahoma (also known as Oklahoma’s Little Italy). Most of the items on the menu are locally produced, and our pasta salad was no exception. Served on a layer of trout-leaf lettuce, the fresh asparagus, red pepper, herbs, cheese and three types of pasta could not have been fresher tasting.
They also sell eggs, honey (we bought the Blueberry Blossom honey), homemade bottled dressings, fresh herbs and produce. Jan is looking forward to blueberry and raspberry season coming mid-June.

If you are headed down Highway 44, it is well worth a visit. Established in 1980, the farm has continued to expand and “pick-your-own” hours and days will vary, so it’s worth checking their Web site, www.sunshinevalleyfarm.com. Or, give them a call at 417-753-2698.
Happy gardening,
Judy Moskoff
