Tour festively decorated holiday homes this weekend in Lafayette Square! The 36th Annual Lafayette Square Holiday Parlour Tour, which takes place Sunday, December 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will feature nine beautiful homes, as well as Lafayette Park United Methodist Church and the Barr Branch Library, throughout the historic neighborhood. Each of the homes is uniquely decorated for the season, and many have retained original architecture and detailing of the Victorian era.

Complimentary horse-drawn carriage rides provided by the St. Louis Carriage Company and carolers from the St. Louis Christmas Carols Association will add to the day’s festivities. And Santa Claus will even make an appearance in the Plaza from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a photo event and fundraiser. In addition, several neighborhood businesses will open their doors on the day of the tour, offering cookies and hot beverages.

Tickets are $15 through December 10 and $20 on tour weekend. To purchase tickets, visit www.lafayettesquare.org (using Visa, Mastercard or PayPal), call 314-772-5724 ext. 9, or mail your reservation to LSRC Holiday Parlour Tour, 2023 Lafayette, St. Louis, MO 63104 with a check made out to LSRC Holiday Parlour Tour. Group sales of 20 or more are $12, and children under age 12 accompanied by an adult are free. Ticket vouchers can also be purchased at Lafayette Square businesses, including Four Muddy Paws, Looking Glass Designs and Schwaig Art Glass Works. All proceeds from the tour benefit the Lafayette Square Restoration Committee’s efforts to restore the park, buildings and public spaces of Lafayette Square, St. Louis’ first historic district.

The tour will begin at the corner of Lafayette and Mississippi, where visitors will receive tour books and maps. All homes are within walking distance of one another. Lafayette Square is one mile south of downtown St. Louis. For more information, please visit www.lafayettesquare.org.

On a recent trip to Philadelphia, with its countless architectural marvels, historic monuments and an architectural heritage that spans centuries, I found inspiration around every corner.

Nearly 100 buildings are considered of such importance that they have been designated as National Historic Landmarks. This impressive architectural collection includes pioneering works by such notable architects as William Strickland, Frank Furness, Daniel Burnham, George Howe, Louis I. Kahn, Robert Venturi, I.M. Pei and Frank Lloyd Wright.

<kbd><samp></samp></kbd>

<kbd><samp></samp></kbd>

The city is also blooming with parks and gardens, many of which grace the city’s historic homes and art museums.

One unique museum that is a gem in the art-rich city – and is sure to live a full (maybe even historic) life – is Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, located on South Street in Center City. The “garden” is a mosaiced folk art environment, created by award-winning mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar. His work is included in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.

On your next trip to the City of Brotherly Love, be sure to add Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens to your walking trip through the city. It’s history in the making! ~ Vicki
