Forest Park is home to many of St. Louis’ best attractions – the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum and the Saint Louis Zoo to name a few. Fortunately for us, it’s also home to the Boathouse, a fun, casual restaurant located in the heart of the park on Post-Dispatch Lake. When the weather is warm, Boathouse visitors can rent paddleboats and kayaks, but in the winter, they can enjoy the restaurant’s famous Shrimp Boils.

Shrimp Boil Thursdays are officially back at the Boathouse. This means that every Thursday until April 28 from 5 to 9 p.m. the Boathouse will be offering three-course meals for $18 per person (excluding tax and gratuity) with live entertainment. According to the restaurant’s website, walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged. Just call 314-367-2224 to reserve your spot!

Last Thursday evening, my husband Mike and I attended the grand opening pre-party of Prime 1000, a modern steakhouse. Prime 1000 is the latest culinary offspring of Chef Claus Schmitz (Mosaic–Modern Fusion Cuisine, Mosaic Market Bistro). Located across the street from Mosaic on Wash Ave., Prime 1000 has a more rustic urban feel than its popular sib. The place was packed with guests sipping complimentary glasses of really great wine and enjoying some yummy appetizers. It was a wonderful evening, and I can’t wait to go back for what I know will be an amazing dinner. A quite unexpected and fun part of the night, however, happened the moment we set foot in the door. Standing 7’ 6” tall and weighing in at over 400 lbs., Calvin Lane spent the evening smiling, greeting guests as they arrived, wishing them a safe drive home and getting his picture taken a lot! Calvin is an actor, spokesperson, model and athlete. He has appeared on shows such as “Texas Ranger” with Chuck Norris and “Baywatch” with David Hasselhoff. Calvin made my 6’6” husband look small! Needless to say he made a “giant” (cringe) impression on everyone there. – Judy, Editor

I had a wonderful tour of the Moonrise Hotel yesterday and their out-of-this-world restaurant, Eclipse, with Chef Wes Johnson. It was so much fun to hear about all of the upcoming events at the Moonrise. For a unique weekend activity to kick-off the fall season, stop by their Great Pumpkin Carve & Glow this Saturday, October 24 at 6177 Delmar in the Loop between 3 and 6 pm, with a judging and lighting of the pumpkins from 6 to 6:30 and an after glow party on the Rooftop Terrace Bar – and bring the family. Join the festivities and have a blast at the Moonrise Hotel in the Loop this weekend!
