Master gardener Judy Moskoff shares her thoughts on garden clubs.
This month, our garden club, The Forsythia Garden Club, will be celebrating 70 years of gardening and friendships. I just attended the Clayton Garden Club meeting and they tell me they are 71 years old! (More on their program about garden fairies in another article… I LOVED it!)
Why do we join a garden club?
My friend and former director of the Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, Jane Merkle, answered this in a letter she sent in the winter of 2003. “That we will give ourselves permission to grow with our friends, garden, and projects.” Jane goes on to say, “Our clubs are based in peace, patriotism, faith, hope, charity, family, friends, love, enthusiasm about life, world understanding, guardianship, conservation, environmental concerns, educational opportunities, historical values, and appreciation.”
St. Louis is home to the National Garden Club, a not-for-profit educational organization with over 6,200 member clubs covering the 50 states. They have an additional 447 International Affiliation memberships. Interested in more information on garden clubs? Go to www.gardenclub.org.
Jane finished her letter with, “Let us continue to grow together – Let us encourage new members to grow with us – Let us sew seeds for future generations – Let us make a difference.”
Jane said it all… Happy Gardening!
